In today’s world, an increasing number of people are finding ways to use existing materials. For some, that involves working on a small project while for others, it consists of major construction. Either way, repurposing is an excellent way to save money, protect the planet, and accomplish something remarkable.

Shipping containers

A perfect example of this is shipping containers. Their actual purpose is to ship, store, and handle a variety of materials. But as large boxes made of steel, they also make a great choice for other things…including homes. They’re so common, you’ve surely seen them transported by trains and semi-trucks.

No experience

It’s amazing just how far a little creativity and planning will go. One couple decided to build a home using two shipping containers. While they’d never done anything so ambitious, they were determined to bring their dream to fruition.

Outside their comfort zone

Both of these individuals worked in the restaurant business. So, building a home from shipping containers on a plot of land they purchased was completely foreign to them. Regardless, they had every intention of following through with their plan.

No turning back

Believe it or not, the couple’s greatest fear was that if they didn’t do this, there was a chance that one day, they’d look back and regret it. So, the first thing they did was have two shipping containers delivered to their property.

An emotional start

In a video they uploaded, the woman explains that when the moving truck with their possessions arrived, she broke down in tears. She knew this was real and the thought of all they had to do was a bit overwhelming. Not only that but they’d both quit their jobs and sold their home so they could begin this new adventure.

A little rocky at first

While laughing, the man explained that their initial plan was to live in a three-bedroom tent on the land. But they ended up moving their belongings into an old barn. That meant before they could even start building their shipping container home, they had to redo a portion of the barn, giving them and their dog a roof over their heads.

Getting started

After settling into what the guy called a “poorly designed barn,” the two of them began the construction process. First came putting oil drums in place that would serve as the foundation for the containers. Next, they worked on the roof.

They had a lot more work to do

The couple sanded down the exterior of the containers in preparation for painting. They also had electricity and plumbing installed. And then, they cut holes in the containers for the door and windows. Before long, what started as two ugly green containers began to resemble an actual house.

Taking shape

Without question, this project was a labor of love…and sometimes, hate. But the two persevered. It was all about a lot of baby steps and learning curves. But they weren’t going to stop now.

An amazing transformation

With blue and cream paint on the exterior of the containers, they had a place that looked gorgeous. The change from when they first started seemed surreal. This was turning into a home where they’d enjoy living in the woods.

Switching focus

Now, it was time for them to turn their attention to the inside. That involved putting up interior framing, adding insulation and walls, installing the floors, and much more. Although they won’t have the house completed for a few more months, their efforts are paying off and it’s brought the two of them even closer.

Sustainability

This couple wanted to do something else…make their home as self-sufficient as possible. So, they purchased a large container to gather rainwater and put solar panels on the roof. When they complete the project, they’ll have a beautiful home where they can live happily and peacefully.
