Whether your December days are getting snowed out in the northern hemisphere or rained out in the southern hemisphere, (or if you’re bored in the sun on the equator) here’s a bit of free fun you can have with items that are just sitting around your house. Grab the kids, some smelly (or clean) old socks that have been separated form their partner and a few other bits and get crafty, get creative and get christmassy!

Let’s get in to it! You’ll need:

  • One white sock
  • String
  • Rice
  • Fabric scraps
  • Buttons
  • Pins

First, cut the sock in half. That’s why I said get an “old” sock!

Cut the sock in half just before the “heel”. We’re going to use the end without the toes, so put the half with the closed end aside for now. Turn the half with two open ends inside out.

Tie the “heel” end closed with string, just after the heel-turn of the sock on the cut end, and make sure it’s tight!

If this knot is too loose you will get rice everywhere.

Next, turn it inside out so that the “inside” of the sock is back on the inside.

Fill it up!

Carefully begin to fill the sock with rice. Make sure your knot is holding at the base of the snowman. Load it high, but so that here is more in the base than the top near the opening.

Tie the opening closed with another piece of string.

Once again, if you don’t want rice everywhere, tie that knot tight! Next, crimp the “neck” of the snowman with your hands. Tie around the neck with string to separate the head from the body. Tie the string to hold in place and trim excess string.

OK, now for the creative part!

We’re going to hide the string with a “scarf” of fabric, any scrap will do but you can start getting creative with this step! Find some old material with a bit of character, you are dressing your little snowman after all!

What happens with the toe end of the sock that we set aside before? It becomes a fun hat. Roll up from the open end and place on your little guy’s head. Now isn’t that so adorable?

We’re nearly there, but we’ve still got some decorating to do!

Find some loose buttons you’ve got lying around and glue them to Lil’ Snowy’s front. Two is plenty, but how many you do is up to you.

To bring your snow man to life, press in two black pins for eyes, and one orange one for a wee nose. Bear in mind that this stage is completely up to you. Do you want to give him a mustache? What about a fancy monocle? There are no limits to what you can do.

Experiment with different fabrics and materials. Make little jewelry or props. Is your frosty friend an artist? A farmer? Lumberjack? You can make any other items out of scraps of card, paper, string, whatever you’ve got in the bottom of your drawer!

The most important rule: Have fun with it!
