It never would have even crossed my mind to upcycle a desk like this. Brilliant!

Some people see old furniture as nothing more than junk. Others envision it as having a tremendous amount of potential. That’s what happened when one guy found an old desk. It didn’t start as much but by the time he was done working his magic, he’d transformed into a gorgeous piece for the home.

Out of style

The desk the man found came from a secondhand store. He’d been on a mission to find some nightstands but wasn’t having much luck. Then, he came up with a brilliant idea.

His purchase

That’s right, he bought the old desk. But he needed two nightstands for his bedroom so it didn’t seem to make much sense. But he had a plan that would completely transform one piece of furniture into two. So, he took it home and went to work.

Starting his project

To make two nightstands, he first had to cut the old desk into two pieces. Using tools, he got started, He carefully made measurements and then begin to saw. It took a little bit of work but he was sure it would be worth it in the end.

Examining the pieces

Now, he had two pieces but they certainly looked nothing like nightstands. Then he noticed something. Stamped on the back of the desk was some writing. Immediately, he was shocked. No way.

Super old

Come to find out, not only was the desk made of maple but it was extremely old. As he looked at the writing, he realized it dated back to December 2, 1942. For a minute, he felt bad about cutting it in half. But he wanted to honor it somehow.

Giving it a new life

This desk probably had a lot of stories to tell. So, he wanted to take care of it while giving it a new look. He began by sanding off the old layer. After finishing that, he found the wood was in much better condition than he imagined.

Starting to take shape

Fortunately, there were only a few minor scratches. He repaired those and then moved on to the next step. That’s when he applied a coat of black latex paint. He covered the sides, as well as the old wooden knobs. For the surface and drawers, he chose a split stain and gel, which turned out to be a great decision.

Gorgeous grain

It wasn’t until he’d applied the stain and gel that he realized something. The top of the old desk had a gorgeous grain design. In its original state, the furniture’s true beauty was hard to see. But now, it was stunning.

Matching nightstands

With all the work done, he ended up with two amazing nightstands. But what he liked about them most was their height. Most store-bought furniture is pretty low to the ground. But this was different. His new pieces weren’t like anything you would ever find in a store.
