Halloween is still months ahead. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t start making your decorations as early as now. With basic DIY skills and tools, you can begin making spooky but crafty projects for Halloween.

Oregon artist Beejay Oslon has come up with cute but creepy decorations for his family’s Halloween display.

Instead of purchasing decorations at his local store, he felt inspired to make his own. The idea came after joining a group on Facebook called Halloween DIY projects.

They looked so creepy but amusing. Just by looking at the details, you can tell it’s a product of hard work.

The unique decorations didn’t cost him that much.

He shared:

“In all, the flowers pictured cost about $100 to make, but that’s largely because the large sunflowers themselves were $15 a pop, which was already half off. You could easily do this at a smaller scale for a few bucks worth of dollar store finds.”

While the project isn’t too expensive, you’ll need patience if you want to recreate them.

Beejay suggests:

“Collect a variety of sizes of skulls and flowers and see which will fit well together,” he said. “Take your time with the prep work . . . I actually had to learn how to make a mold and cast the plastic for those skulls, which took a bunch of research and way more time than I had intended to spend on this, but in the end I’m glad I didn’t rush it.”

The skull sunflowers weren’t enough.

Of course, to make them stand out, Beejay had to be extra creative in setting them up in his place. He added fake moss as well as faux spiderwebs to his creation. The little touches made the skull sunflowers creepier.

The process of making the project wasn’t easy for Beejay. At one point, he actually created a mold and poured his personal skull shapes. For that, he needed to do a lot of research and invest a lot of his time.

Well, the result of his project made all the hard work worth it.

If you’re thinking of making your own skull sunflowers, you need to prepare the following:

  • Utility knife
  • Hot glue gun
  • Plastic skulls
  • Fake moss
  • Fake sunflowers

Here are the steps:

1. Get some plastic skulls that will fit your fake flowers.
2. Using a utility knife, remove the backs of the skulls.
3. Run some hot glue on the edges of the skull’s back.
4. Place a bit of the fake moss on it to help hide the edges and to create texture.
5. Press the skull into the center of the flower.

If you’re finding those steps confusing, you can check out a tutorial here.

Now, if you want to make the skulls a bit more realistic, you can stain them. You can also paint them completely if you want. How you put the pieces together will depend on you, too. This is where you can play around and test your creativity.

For Beejay, he decided to he made a grim garden scene. Apart from the sunflower skulls, he also added a massive spider and a creepy skeleton gardener. He also included a bucket of flowers with eyeballs.
