When it comes to storing food we all have the same solution at home. Tupperware. It makes storing food in the fridge a breeze.
But let’s face it. Certain foods can leave your plastic containers pretty gross-looking, even after you clean them. You know, that orangey-stain on the inside?
While it might not be a huge deal for you to use stained containers – it’s embarrassing when you’re trying to send a guest home with leftovers… Am I right?
Luckily, a TikTok user named Adi Kempler shared a brilliant Tupperware cleaning hack you might want to try. With just a few simple steps, it gets greasy, stained containers looking good enough to actually “eat out of.”
Requires three common things
The trick requires dish soap, warm water, and a paper towel.
Adi starts out with a stained food storage container that looks like the ones floating around many of our cabinets. She then adds a couple of squirts of dish soap to the container.
Next, she adds warm water.
Adi places some ripped-up pieces of paper towel inside, then puts the lid on top.
Shake, shake, shake
The last step involves shaking the sealed container vigorously. Adi advises doing so for approximately 45 seconds to 1 minute.
Ready for the results?
After she removes the paper towel pieces and rinses out the plastic container – it looks good as new! Seriously, I would be proud to bring my mom a meal in one like that.
Adi learned the useful hack from her stepmom, who fortunately passed it on to her.
She told BuzzFeed:
“My stepmom actually showed [the trick] to me. She’s been doing it for years prior to getting nicer glass containers, so she gave me the tip when I was having trouble getting rid of stains.”
Adi’s video has gotten over 590K “likes” on TikTok and has been viewed 4.3 million times.
She captioned it:

It’s not the only trick out there for cleaning food storage containers.
Food52 created a list of ideas for removing stains and smells from Tupperware (or similar containers).
One idea involves vinegar, which of course, is a jack of all trades when it comes to cleaning!
The writer explains:
“Rinse them with vinegar. After washing your containers with hot water and dish soap, fill them with white vinegar and let them sit for at least three minutes to remove icky, lasting smells. Then, pour out the vinegar and wash again with soap and water.”
Another idea involves a bit of sunshine. According to the Food52 article, expose the containers to “direct sunlight.”
“…sunlight improves almost everything. Placing containers outside on a sunny day will air them out and take advantage of the sun’s natural ability to fight odors.”
Many TikTok users suggest the sunshine idea too. One wrote:
“Guys just leave them out in the sun for a few hours. Works just as well👍”
