I love how it turned out! You don't have to spend a lot of money to have great furniture.

Upcycling, recycling, repurposing, transforming…whatever term you prefer to use, it’s all wonderful. While some people won’t admit it, they have pieces of furniture in their homes that they dramatically changed. Look, DIY projects are fun and when done right, they result in something that exceeds expectations.

Thrift stores

One of the best places to find furniture and other items to repurpose is the thrift store. You’ll be shocked at what you’ll find. Along with beds, dressers, chairs, stools, and more, you’ll come across all kinds of light fixtures, mirrors, knick-knacks, and a host of other goodies.

Look past the obvious

Like a popular DIY blogger named MaCenna, she didn’t pay much attention to the aesthetics of a stool she found at a thrift store. Instead, she saw that it had potential. And with a $10 price tag, it was a real bargain.

She had a plan

MaCenna purchased the stool and took it home. She came up with a plan that would breathe new life into it. After all, it really needed a makeover.

Additional finds

But while walking around, two other items caught her attention. First, there was a jewelry box that looked as though it was made from some kind of teak material. Second, she found a wooden tray. Ultimately, MaCenna left with three items for less than $20.

Asking for input

She then posted samples of three fabrics, asking her followers which one they liked the best for the stool she just bought. Thanks to their input, the decision-making process was much easier. In the end, she chose an abstract floral print.

A new look

After some careful thought, she decided to cover the diameter of the stool with the floral print fabric. But on the top, she’d use some black canvas material she already had on hand. These would complement each other beautifully.

Changing the legs

Initially, the legs on the stool were a silver/gray color that didn’t go well with the floral print fabric. So, MaCenna removed them. Next, she spray-painted the legs black so they’d work with the chosen fabric.

Time to sew

She then measured both the floral and black fabric to come up with the proper dimensions to cover the stool. Next, she used her sewing machine to put the two together. When finished, she simply slipped the new cover over the top of the stool.

Final touches

To secure the fabric, MaCenna flipped the stool over. Using a staple gun, she attached the loose ends to the bottom. With that done, she screwed on the new legs.

A gorgeous piece of furniture

With everything done, MaCenna showed her viewers the result. For the stool, fabric, and spray-paint, she completed the project for around $20. Remember, while this stool wasn’t aesthetically pleasing at the time of purchase, it had good bones.

The other two pieces

As for the box and tray, she transformed them as well. The jewelry box got a fresh coat of stain that gave it a deeper and richer appearance, as well as a new, shiny handle. For the tray, MaCenna painted it black, added some decorative pieces, and placed a mirror inside. Then, she hung on the wall.
