What do you do with your old clothes? Do you throw them away? Do you give them to your family or friends? Or do you donate them to those in need?

There’s another way we can give new life to our old clothes: through repurposing them.

When you have clothes in your closet that you don’t want to use anymore, please do the planet a favor and don’t throw them in the trash. Did you know that we throw away around 13.1 million tons of textile trash yearly? And the worst part is that textiles can’t be recycled. That’s why they end up in our landfills.

That’s why the best way to avoid this is to give new life to our old clothes.

And there are so many ways we can repurpose our old clothes. All we need are just our creativity and basic sewing skills and supplies. Are you ready?

The first thing you’ll need to do is figure out which clothes you won’t be wearing anymore. Set aside some time for this as this can take a while. Divide them into different piles, one for giving to family and friends, one for donation, and another for repurposing.

Be sure to send out the clothes you’re giving away and for donation immediately. It can be easy to lose track of this.

Now, let’s start repurposing clothes.

There are a lot of different projects you can create. Your old shirts can become pillowcases or produce bags. You can turn your oversized shirts into skirts, pants into dresses, old shirts into scarves, and your old shirts into new shirts simply by cutting off sleeves or creating crop tops. You can even repurpose your husband’s old office tops into dresses for your little girl.

If you have old clothes that are beyond repair though, you can turn them into dust rags. You can never have enough of those.

Well, what about jeans? What can you do to rebirth them?

One way to repurpose old jeans is to turn them into tote bags. This is especially a great idea if your jeans are already frayed or too big or too small for you. Or maybe they have sentimental value and you don’t want to let go but you can’t wear them anymore.

All you need are the jeans, scissors, and basic sewing supplies.

First, you’ll need to cut off the bottom part of the jeans. The length you’ll need to cut will depend on the length of the bag you want it to be. Maybe around 10-12 inches perhaps? So you have enough allowance as well to seal the top and bottom.

And then use the band of the jeans for the strap.
