You might not think much about an old empty barrel – but if you have a mind like Rust Is Gold, you’d see a BBQ grill.
Rust Is Gold – DIY Creations is a super fun Facebook page with just a small community following. However, their YouTube channel is on fire with nearly 116,000 followers and counting. They even have a combined total of over 17 million for their incredible DIY videos.
The page is known for sharing clever, creative, and out-of-the-box DIY projects. Unfortunately they don’t sell any of their awesome creations, but they hope to inspire people to break out their creative side.
One of their most recent videos has garnered the attention of DIYers all over the globe – they transformed an empty, metal barrel into a functional and savvy BBQ grill.
Want to know how to make your own? Here’s how! This will look so awesome in your backyard, and your friends won’t believe you made it yourself – with a little inspiration, of course.
First, you’ll want to use power tools, sanders, and whatever else you need to completely remove any paint and residue from the barrel.
Next, using an electric saw or other comparable power tools, you’ll need to cut the barrel in half. Be careful and be sure to wear the proper hand and eye protection!
Set the two halves of barrel aside and start working on the next critical piece – the ‘foundation’. The grill will need to be on some sort of foundation at counter-height. Find a piece of wood that will be large enough to hold the barrel while you fit the metal pieces.
You’ll either need to have some metal-working experience or purchase some metal pieces to use as stability and legs. Then, you’ll need to weld the bottom half to the grill.
Of course, you’ll want the grill to be mobile, in case you need to move it to a park or family gathering. So, flip that baby upside and add some wheels.
Place the almost-grill right-side-up and attach hinges to the bottom half. This is how you’ll attach the top piece of the grill – aka the other half of the barrel.
The heat and smoke will need to escape somehow, so it’s extremely important that you create a smoke vent out of the side of the barrel grill. Again, if you’re handy with metal-working, you can create your own, or purchase small piping from a hardware store.
Now, it’s time to customize and get it functioning. Feel free to re-paint the barrel whatever color you’d prefer – Rust Is Gold went with a classic black. They then added more shelving for plates, condiments, tools, etc.
You’ll also, of course, need a heavy-duty BBQ grill rack. If you can’t find one that is pre-made either online or at a BBQ parts store, you can attempt to craft your own – Rust Is Gold has another video tutorial for that.
The end result is a real beauty, isn’t it?
Of course, there are many details in between all of these steps that only the master can explain. So, be sure to watch the entire video tutorial of the barrel BBQ below.
