Have you ever felt that you were born to do something different?

Brian Trautman had a stable job, and he was working as a software developer.

He owned a house, a steady income, a car, and good companions. But for some reason, Brian felt that he was supposed to do something different.

Many people have felt this way, right? Unfortunately, not everyone has the guts to explore and find out what they were meant to do.

Unlike many of us, Brian did something unexpected.

He decided to quit his job and sold almost all of his properties, including his home.

He bought a sailboat, SV Delos, and decided to sail.

Ocean, freedom, and beauty

Brian fell in love with the ocean.

Packed with everything that he needed, he started sailing. He watched videos, and tutorials and studied everything about sailing and living in a boat.

When he visited New Zealand, he met Karin, a woman fascinated with his way of living, and soon, she found herself married and sailing across the world with Brian.

After nine years of adventure, Brian and Karin welcomed their baby girl, Sierra, into the world of beauty and nature.

How is it possible to live in a boat?

The couple would go on land when they needed supplies and stock up on their groceries. SV Delos has many storage areas and a freezer. Their stocks can last for months at a time.

Because of Brian’s vast knowledge about everything, he was able to set up solar panels that give 1400 watts of power. They also have wind generators that give them 400 watts of power.

If you’re wondering about their water, they have installed a salt-water desalinator, and they can store up to 1000 gallons of water. If you’re asking about their bathroom, they actually have two.

According to them, they often have guests that stay with them, and there’s another room and bathroom to use.

Their living area has two big freezes situated under the sofas. They can store anything they want, but most of the time, they have big fish and other seafood as well.

Getting used to living in the ocean and the challenges

Delos is a 53-foot long Amel Super Maramu, but majestic as she was, Delos needed some repairs and customization too.

According to Brian, he learned to be a mechanic, electrician, plumber, diesel mechanic, air conditioner specialist, and many more. Brian said that they spend around $700/month for Delos. In this amount, he’s the one doing every work needed.

So imagine how much it would take if you don’t know how to fix your boat?

Another challenge is that you have to be ready for anything, and they mean that literally. Being in the ocean is fantastic, but sometimes, you wake up in the middle of the night, and you need to be prepared when there’s a storm.

They earn money through their YouTube earnings.

Brian and Karin run the YouTube channel Sailing SV Delos, and they have 786K subscribers.

A few reminders to remember

For all their fans and followers, the couple showcases how it’s like to live in the open waters.

The beauty, perks, lessons, and so much more. Although, they also want their fans to know that this is not something that you can decide one day and go for it.

You need to plan and make sure you can do it.
