Stop… unhand that burger. It may be contaminated. Cargill Meat Solutions plant in Colorado recently recalled more than 25,000 pounds of ground beef.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported that it could be contaminated with E. Coli.

The meat they believe to be contaminated was produced on Aug. 16, 2018. It will contain an “EST. 86R” label inside the USDA mark of inspection. It also has a use by date of Sept. 5 and was shipped to warehouses in California and Colorado.

“10-lb. chubs of ‘EXCEL 93/7 FINE GRIND GROUND BEEF’ with ‘Use/Frz. By Sep 05’ on the chub label and a ‘PACK DATE 08/16/2018’ on the box label,” the USDA’s press release states.

Cargill Meat Solutions discovered the problem on Aug. 22 after they reviewed their records and determined that their product may be exposed to another product that was presumed to be positive for E. coli O157:H7.

The company then notified the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

Thankfully, there have been no reports of any adverse reactions from consumption of the recalled products. Those who believe they have become ill should reach out to their healthcare provider for medical attention.

E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps 2–8 days (3–4 days, on average) after exposure the organism. While most people recover within a week, some develop a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). This condition can occur among persons of any age but is most common in children under 5-years old and older adults,” the USDA wrote.

Symptoms of illness also include easy bruising, pallor, and decreased urine output.

Anyone experiencing these symptoms after eating a contaminated product should seek emergency medical care.

Cargill Meat Solutions customers are urging customers to check their freezers and their refrigerators for these projects. They should be thrown away or returned to the store where they were bought.

“FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers,” the USDA says.

Some stores that have been affected include Safeway and Albertson’s locations in California, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Nevada, New Mexico and South Dakota.

The retail distribution list will be added to at www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls as new information becomes available.
