New Tiny Home Built With Bit And Pieces Of History

May 29th, 2018

Tiny houses are a big trend right now.

People are giving up the big rooms and large amounts of clutter and settling for smaller homes with less storage space and less stuff in general. People are building tiny houses all over the country, and there are even television shows that focus on the design and construction of these small living spaces.

Since most tiny houses are built in modern times, they have modern designs.

That doesn’t mean there can’t be tiny houses with old-fashioned designs. In fact, Minnesota design company Murphy & Co. has created a unique tiny house that is turning heads and getting rave reviews. It’s not your normal tiny house; it’s got some old-fashioned charm that would make you think it’s hundreds of years old.

The Murphy & Co website described the company by saying:

“We are a close-knit, highly collaborative team of professional listeners and dream makers who don’t take ourselves too seriously, like penguins. Formed in 2003, we specialize in the residential design of classic, time-honored homes in a diverse range of styles. We do not have a signature look – instead, we are an ego-free office sought after by clients who desire a home that feels as if it’s always been there, and our diversity comes from listening very well to our clientele.”

This 860-square-foot home near Lake Minnetonka is known as the Gatehouse.

One of the things that make this house so special is that it was made from scraps of other old buildings. The roof is from a 1910s building in Pennsylvania, and the limestone walls were scraps from the Lake Street Bridge.

The outside of the home is rustic and unique, but the inside is cozy and warm. The use of neutral colors works well with the rustic décor and design and helps make the small home appear bigger. The interior pieces were made from other older structures, too. The wood floors come from a home in Wisconsin and were refinished to match the home perfectly.

The pitched roof reveals large wooden beams that come from barns dating back to the 1860s and 1870s in Minnesota.

The amazing fireplace is made from stone found in Iowa and is a main focal point in the home.

So, what makes tiny houses so special?

It seems like everyone wants one. Some people like them because it seems like an affordable way to build a home. Some like them because they are versatile and can be put basically anywhere. No matter the reason, these little homes are becoming a big hit.

Tiny House Giant Journey explained the trend of tiny houses, saying:

“The tiny house movement is a counterculture movement. It’s also a minimalist alternative lifestyle that’s meant to be affordable and eco-friendly. One common misconception is that tiny homeowners are poor, this just isn’t true. In fact, most tiny homeowners have more savings than traditional homeowners. So how small is a tiny house? I believe it’s as small as you’re willing to go to obtain financial freedom with a small home footprint.”

The Gatehouse is definitely different from other tiny houses, but it may not be for everyone.

Some people like a more modern look and others are into antique. Regardless, there’s no denying that this house is beautiful and has a story to tell.

If it’s not your style, don’t worry.

If you decide to make your own tiny house, you can customize it to fit your needs. Make it as big or small as you want, put it on wheels, or build it in a tree. The sky is the limit. The best thing about tiny houses is that they can look exactly how you want them.
