Owning a dog is a pretty big responsibility. In addition to feeding, grooming, and taking them for regular checkups, your dog also needs a safe place to play and exercise. When designing your backyard or other play space for your pup, keep the following tips in mind.

Put in More Fencing

Adding a section of fence to the top of your current fence is a great way to keep your dog in the yard. Make sure it has a slight inwards tilt or your dog might still climb out. You can also extend chicken wire out from the top of the fence to create a small awning, which should keep your dog from climbing over.

Place Digging Deterrents Along the Inside Fence Edge

Keep your dog from digging underneath the fence by installing deterrents, such as an L-footer, additional fencing, or chicken wire. Options include extending the deterrent into the ground or laying it on the grass directly in front of the fence and placing small rock, mulch, or planters on top of it.

Remove Any Climbing Aids

Dogs are resourceful. You should take a walk around your yard and remove anything your dog could use to climb out of your yard. This includes any wood piles, playground equipment, boxes, or other items that could give them a leg up when climbing.

Pour Concrete Along the Perimeter of the Fence

Another way to deter dogs that like to dig is by pouring a concrete footer around the perimeter of your fence. Sink the bottom of the fence into the mixture to create an even more resilient barrier; just make sure to take into account any water flow issues in your yard before installing to prevent flooding.

Use a Coyote Roller

Long metal bars called coyote rollers are meant to keep coyotes out of your yard. You can use this same item to keep your dogs within your yard’s confines by installing them on the inside instead of the outside of the fence. Look for coyote roller kits online.

Block Your Dogs View

One way to keep a dog from leaving the yard is to block its view of what is on the outside. Often, dogs leave a yard to investigate another dog or something else that interests them. Use planters, high fencing, or other materials to block your dog’s view.

Use Landscaping as a Deterrent

Plants, hedges, and other shrubs can also work as a deterrent to keep your dog inside your yard. You can even use specific plants that repel dogs, including ruta graveolens, marigolds, and thorny plants. Before placing any plants in your yard, make sure they are not toxic to your pets.

Keep your dog occupied by having plenty of toys and play equipment in your yard. In addition, make sure they always have enough fresh food and water, and play with them daily. This can keep your dog from getting bored and lessen the chance that they will go looking for something new outside your yard.

Providing a safe and fun environment for your dog helps keep them from getting lost or injured. Using the tips above, design an area around your home suited to keep your dog in while allowing them to get the daily activity they need.
