There’s nothing worse than buying groceries only to have it go bad before you get the chance to eat it. Especially since there are people out there who go hungry. But there are ways that you can make your groceries last longer so they don’t go to waste.
Here Are 15 Hacks To Make Your Groceries Last Longer:
1) Get Rid Of Spoiled Produce
Make sure you review and remove any and all produce from your refrigerator that appears to be bruised, overripe, or rotten. Spoiled food releases ethylene gas that can spoil the rest of your good produce.
2) Rinse Berries In Vinegar
Use vinegar to help preserve your berries. Rinse them with one part vinegar and 10 parts water. Dry them in a clean container and enjoy them for much longer.
3) Butter Up Your Cheese
Buttering your cheese can prevent it from drying out. Dab your cheese on cut butter and wrap your cheese up with wax paper. Place in a reusable bag and store in the warmest part of your fridge.
4) Ditch The Tupperware
Use glass containers and Mason jars instead of plastic containers to store your foods. Your food and leftovers will last a few days longer in glassware.
5) Keep Stone Fruit Out of Plastic Bags
Don’t just toss your stone fruit in the fridge with the plastic grocery store bags still on it. This will cause them to ripen and mold quicker. It’s best to store them at room temperature without plastic.
6) Put Onion In Pantyhose
Place an onion in each foot of a clean unused pair of pantyhose. Tie a knot and add another onion on top and repeat this. Keeping onions dry, separated and able to breath will make them last the longest.
7) Use Paper Towels On Leafy Greens
Leafy greens can go quick. Place a paper towel inside the same plastic bag or container where you’re storing your leafy greens. This will wick away moisture and prevent it from wilting or getting slimy.
8) Place Herbs In Water
Bunch up your herbs and trim their stems. Place them in a vase of water to last longer.
9) Put Bread In The Freezer
Store bulk bread in the freezer. The bread will last a lot longer. Just defrost it when you need to.
10) Keep Produce Away From Windows
We keep some of our produce out on the countertops. But this is a terrible idea if that countertop is near a window. The sunlight will speed up the ripening process. Keep your produce out of the sun.
11) Wrap Your Banana Tips
Make your bananas last longer by wrapping their tips in plastic wrap. This will prevent the bananas from emitting a gas that makes them ripen.
12) Wrap Green Veggies In Foil
Wrap your broccoli, celery or lettuce in foil. It will last for a month this way.
13) Make Sure Your Refrigerator Is At The Right Temperature
To prevent toxic bacteria, your refrigerator should be at 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Food spoils when your fridge is too warm and freezes when too cold, so make sure it’s set right.
