Paint Your Ceiling a Different Color
One way to update the look of your home is to paint the ceilings of your rooms a color that contrasts with the color of the surrounding walls. When choosing a color, keep in mind that a darker ceiling gives a room a more intimate feel, while a lighter color makes the ceilings appear higher than they actually are.
Install Teak Flooring in Your Shower
While you usually want to avoid installing a wood floor in your shower, teak is a viable option for such a project. Used in ship design in the past, teak wood contains natural oils that help repel water and protect it from moisture. You can install teak planks, which aren’t removable, or teak inserts, which you can remove.
Paint Fake Windows on Your Garage Door
Another way to make your home look like a million dollars is to paint fake windows on a plain garage door. Simply tape out the window design you want with painter’s tape on the top panels, and paint over the area with a glossy black paint. Allow it to dry, and remove the painter’s tape.
Paint Over Your Old Kitchen Linoleum
A great way to upgrade the look of your kitchen floors is to paint over your old linoleum. Start by finding two different colors of paint, such as a gray and white. Once you find the colors you want, start by painting the floor with one of the colors. Once dry, apply painter’s tape in straight lines atop the first coat of paint, and then paint alternating stripes with the other color.
Paint Your Walls to Give the Illusion of Crown Molding
Create the illusion of crown molding in your home at the fraction of the cost by installing molding higher up on the wall and painting the space between the molding and the baseboards the same color. You can also do this along the top of the walls in your home by installing two thin pieces of trim, about 1/2 inch apart, around the top of your room and painting in between them.
Add Decorative Brackets to Your Closet Rods
If you have closet rods that are open to the rest of the room, you can install beautiful iron shelf brackets to the end of them to make them look more expensive. Before installation, make sure to paint them in a color that matches the rest of the decor in the room.
Add a Garden Area Around Your Home
Another way to easily make your home look more expensive is to add a garden area around the outside of the front or back of your home. If you do plan on performing this project, make sure to keep the area well maintained or it will look worse than if you didn’t have a garden area in the first place.

A great way to make a room look more spacious is to add some mirrored surfaces. In addition to giving the illusion of added space, adding full-length mirrors to your closet doors can also give them a dual purpose. Now, you can use them to help you get a good look at yourself as you get ready for your day.

One way to really spruce up the exterior of your home is to put in a monogram planter. A monogram planter is in the shape of a specific letter of the alphabet, usually the first letter of your family’s last name. The planter hangs vertically on the wall and contains shelving within a cavity in the letter designed to hold plants.
